The kaleidoscope works differently than the mirror tools that came before it. Those earlier designs could only create patterns when everything stayed still. The mirrors had to be set at the right angle. The object being reflected had to stay in place. If anything shifted, the pattern fell apart. Reflection had to wait until the setup was perfect.
