What lions have taught me about strength and courage

The lioness watches her cubs run and play
knowing that someday,
they will encounter trials of their own.
Even though she has worked to protect her family,
she knows that someday they will stare down
threats, as have all of their ancestors.
And it is hard not to imagine how things might worsen.
She has known the pain
of what it means to watch a community shrink.
